The Sultanate of Oman preserves the world’s largest exposure of the oceanic crust and mantle sequence rock formation known as the Semail Ophiolite. These rocks were thrusted over the continental Crust of Oman during the Late Cretaceous period, and it represents fragments of the Neo-Tethys Oceanic crust making it a site for many geoscientists to study and examine it. We are organizing a field trip to give you an opportunity to visit and examine the full sequence of the Semail Ophiolite with two leading Oman experts who will discuss and explain to you the different Semail Ophiolite units, Ophiolite obduction tectonics and initial process of the subductions before Ophiolite detachment.
