Assessment of the Unconventional Resource Potential in the Vaca Muerta Formation, Southern Mendoza, Argentina
0.8). Structural modeling and seismic inversion studies indicate that Vaca Muerta’s productive levels maintain significant continuity beyond the areas explored by YPF. In this regard, the potentially exploitable area could expand by 145 km2 in Payún Oeste and 400 km2 in Cañadón Amarillo, in addition to the 300 km2 previously identified in CNVIIA and Paso de las Bardas Norte. From a production perspective, exploratory well tests in southern Mendoza reinforce the hypothesis that the region holds favorable conditions for unconventional development. Horizontal well tests in AN.x-101 and PBN.x-101 have shown promising production rates, with initial flow rates suggesting the feasibility of future development in the province. This study represents a significant advancement in characterizing Mendoza’s unconventional potential, providing key insights for future exploratory campaigns and strategic decision-making in the hydrocarbon industry. The development of Vaca Muerta’s unconventional resources in Mendoza presents a critical opportunity to counteract the production decline of conventional fields, incorporate new reserves, and drive investment in the province’s energy sector. The findings highlight the need for continued exploration and characterization of the formation to maximize the utilization of this strategic resource for Argentina’s energy development. " >
